原创 Ultra-macho prognostication engine design (Part 1)

In my previous blogs on my Pedagogical and Phantasmagorical Inamorata Prognostication Engine project, I have alluded to the fact that this will be complemented by a masculine counterpart. This little beauty will be presented in an antique-looking wooden box that will sit on top of the main engine, as illustrated in this mockup I just threw together.

The first question is what to call this new unit. My working title is the Phrankly Phenomenal Ultra-Macho Prognostication Engine, which certainly sums things up. Having said this, I'm not 100% committed to the Ultra-Macho portion of the name. Any alternative suggestions would be gratefully received.

Observe how (what will be) the curvy brass panel on the front of the Ultra-Macho Engine is a slightly scaled-up version of the cutout in the wooden panel in the lower portion of the Inamorata Engine, thereby providing a nice visual connection between the systems. On the left side of the brass panel will be my grandest antique analogue meter. On the right side will be a pseudo-coal furnace flickering merrily away.

An alternative to the pseudo-coal furnace might be an embedded CRT tube, which could display analogue heartbeat-type signals or perhaps ghostly images, a bit like the images below.

In the lower middle of the Ultra-Macho Engine's panel will be a relatively large LED display (shown as a green circle in the images above). I think this will be implemented in mother of pearl with a bright tri-coloured LED behind it to counterpoint the myriad display dots festooned around the panels on the Inamorata Engine.

The upper middle of the Ultra-Macho Engine's panel will feature a large on-off switch. It won't matter how you position this switch. There may be sound effects and some visual feedback whenever its state is modified, but the main meter and the display LED will always end up in their active/happy states. I think I've found the perfect device. Take a look at the two photographs below. This incredibly tasty three-way knife switch, which I only recently acquired off eBay, is gracing a bookshelf in my office.

But wait, there's more. Do you recall the 12-inch-tall antique vacuum tube I have in my office? I'm thinking of taking this beast out of its transport frame and mounting it, along with a bunch of smaller tubes, on top of the Ultra-Macho Engine and then illuminating them all from underneath with tri-coloured LEDs that flicker and fade between different colour compositions. The more I visualise this in my mind's eye, the more I think it's going to look amazingly cool.

That's the current state of play. We can talk about the strange sound effects and suchlike later. What do you think? In particular, do you like the pseudo-coal furnace element, or do you think the antique CRT tube would be preferable? And what do you think about the Phrankly Phenomenal Ultra-Macho Prognostication Engine moniker? Would you change the Ultra-Macho portion? How would you replace it?
