No, I don't wish to be initiated into a gang of rascally rascals, you understand–I just like to join a Flash mob... Of course I would also like to be able to dance in such a way that didn't cause onlookers to wince (some of my more enthusiastic moves bring tears to your – and my – eyes), but let's take things one step at a time (pun intended). Before we delve into the origin of my current interest, let's first remind ourselves of some of the true classics in his genre. One video that always brings a smile to my face is the historic flash mob in Antwerp train station – you know, the one where a bunch of people suddenly start singing one of the theme songs from The Sound of Music ( Click here to see this video). Another one I would LOVE to have either been part of or to have just experienced as a passerby was the classic Improve Everywhere "happening" in Grand Central Station when hundreds of "operatives" all "froze" at exactly the same time. I love watching the expressions on peoples' faces and I cannot but help wonder what my own reaction would have been ( Click here to see this video). Of course, my all-time favorite is the 2008 video Where the Hell is Matt? I cannot help it – the video and the music just make me feel incredibly happy ( Click here to see this Video). In fact, I just now discovered that there are a number of derivative videos, including Where the Hell is Matt 2010 World Cup ( Click here ), Where the Hell are Matt's Outtakes (the first one of him dancing on the rock is terrifying and sends shivers down my spine – Click here ), a young girl and her dad dancing with Matt ( Click here ), and a guy called Rav dancing with Matt ( Click here ). I even found a really funny WoW (which I think stands for "World of War", but I'm not sure) animated version ( Click here ). I'm starting to feel left out. I want to dance with Matt! But none of the above is what I wanted to talk to you about (grin). I just ran across some more really cool "flash mob happenings" that I really wished I had seen in person. Check out the following videos: Flash mob at Copenhagen Central Station Flash Mob at the Ohio State University Abba Flash Mob Flash Mob at Singapore Changi Airport One thing I always notice is the faces of the observers in these videos. People are just walking around getting on with their lives and, generally-speaking, not looking particularly happy. And then they find themselves embroiled in one of these "happenings" and great big beaming smiles start to appear. I really, really would love to see one of these in person...
