Since the Ethernet applications from 10BaseT operating at 10Mbps to 100Mbps and even Gigabit, the IC chips are becoming fairly complicated with different advanced processes. Considering the Ethernet interfaces are exposed to external world, the transceiver circuits are very vulnerable to the damages coming from electrostatic discharge (ESD), electrical fast transient (EFT) and Lightning. As a result, how to protect the sensitive components from damage without deteriorating the high speed data lines performances is a great challenge to design engineers.
