The operation of the transceiver falls into one of 2 modes in all supported configurations. These are single-width and double-width modes.  The terms single-width and double-width are defined by the serialization factor and the channel width.

The Serialization factor is the width of the interface between the transceiver PCS and PMA. Single-width mode can support an 8- or 10-bit-wide interface.  Double-width mode supports a 16 or 20-bit-wide interface.

Channel width is the width of the FPGA fabric to transceiver PCS interface.  Single-with mode supports channel widths of 8, 10, 16 or 20 bits.  Double-width mode supports widths of 16, 20, 32 and 40 bits.

The Arria II data rate range supported by the transceivers is 600 Mbps to 3.75 Gbps in single-width mode.  Double-width mode is not available in Arria II GX devices.

The Stratix IV GX data rate range supported by the transceivers is 600 Mbps to 3.75 Gbps in single-width mode and 1 Gbps to 8.5 Gbps in double width mode.

The Stratix IV GT data rate range supported by the transceivers is 2.488 Gbps to 3.75 Gbps in single-width mode and 2.488 Gbps to 11.3 Gbps in double width mode.

The HardCopy IV GX data rate range supported by the transceivers is 600 Mbps to 3.75 Gbps in single-width mode and 1 to 6.5 Gbps in double-width mode.
