INTRODUCTION
Today's smartphones essentially represent a cross between traditional mobile phones and small, hand-held computers or organisers. As such, they perform communications functions as well as running applications ranging from relatively simple electronic diaries and games to word-processing and multi-media. This dual use is usually mirrored in a dual processor architecture: a communications (“comms”) processor performs the signal processing associated with cellular voice calls, while application programs are run on a general-purpose “apps processor” more similar to those found in PDAs or notebook computers.
