In a cold plasma a small fraction of the atoms in a gas are ionized. The electrons reach a very high temperature whereas the ions remain at the ambient temperature. These plasmas can be created by applying a very high electric field to accelerate electrons which ionize the atoms. The behavior of a cold plasma with losses created by particle collisions can be described by the Drude dispersion model. The factors describing the dielectric dispersion behaviour of a material are the plasma and the collision frequency. The plasma frequency depends directly on the density of the electrons of the plasma. The collision frequency describes the probability of collisions between electrons and atoms.
